Muffle Furnace for Labs

SH Muffle Furnace
Rapid Heat Control

Through decades of R&D, we’ve refined our line to deliver high performance and world-class quality that save time and cost.

But what sets SH Scientific muffle furnaces apart?

Rapid, Precise Heating

All models feature state-of-the-art heating elements made of Kanthal (1050°C and 1200°C), SiC (1500°C), or MoSi2 (1800°C). These materials are temperature-specific to provide the best possible balance of temperature stability, energy use, and longevity under real-world operation.

Heat settings are handled by a trustworthy digital controller accurate to just ±1°C. Programmable controllers are available for most models.

The interior is surrounded by ceramic insulation, which not only minimizes energy consumption and temperature variation, but keeps the furnace safe to touch while operating.

Versatile & Trusted Equipment

Your goal is to explore the frontiers of research or production. Ours is to equip you with dependable performance at the push of a button.

  • Quickly melt samples for molding, coating, enameling, etc.
  • Sinter and anneal metals and ceramics to create pure, resilient finished goods
  • Rapidly perform combustion and ashing analyses
  • Debind and handle by-products from plastics and polymers

From the temperature-specific heating elements right down to the positioning of insulation, we’ve obsessed over nuances that add up to a muffle furnace that just works. No wasting time on slow heating, temperamental controls, or complex set-up.

Choosing a muffle furnace

Application and selection questions for laboratory muffle furnaces.

What is a muffle furnace used for in a laboratory?

Ashing, loss-on-ignition, binder burnout, calcination, heat treatment, and sintering: processes needing a large, uniformly heated chamber rather than a controlled gas path. A muffle furnace suits crucibles, trays, and bulk samples loaded through a front door. SH Scientific muffle furnaces are used across materials testing, ceramics, environmental analysis, and metallurgy for exactly this class of work.

Muffle furnace or tube furnace: which should I choose?

Choose a muffle furnace when the sample is bulky, loaded in crucibles or trays, and the process runs in air or a backfilled inert atmosphere. Choose a tube furnace when the process needs gas flowing across the sample, tight atmospheric control, or a small well-defined uniform zone. Chamber format decides it: a muffle gives volume, a tube gives atmosphere control along a defined path.

When is a quartz chamber muffle furnace worth specifying?

Ceramic chambers can shed a small amount of powdery white residue, harmless for most work but unacceptable for contamination-sensitive or dust-ignition-sensitive processes. A quartz chamber removes that risk and extends heating element life. SH Scientific offers quartz chambers at 1200°C in 5, 14, and 27 liter standard models and 1.5, 10, and 31 liter vacuum models. Alumina chambers are available on request for higher temperatures.

Do I need a vacuum muffle furnace, or is a standard model enough?

A standard model is enough whenever the process tolerates air, which covers most ashing, burnout, and general heat treatment. Move to the vacuum series when oxidation would change the result, as with battery materials, metals, and some ceramics. The vacuum series exists so that oxygen-free work does not force a move down to the much smaller chamber of a tube furnace.

How does a muffle furnace compare with a high-temperature drying oven?

A drying oven circulates heated air to remove moisture and solvents, typically up to 500°C. A muffle furnace radiates heat inside an insulated chamber and reaches 1050°C to 1900°C, which is what ashing, calcination, and sintering require. SH Scientific supplies both, and the dividing line is chemistry: drying and curing belong in an oven, while decomposition and phase change need a furnace.

Which labs and industries use SH Scientific muffle furnaces?

University materials science and chemistry departments for sintering, combustion, and carbon nanofiber thermal treatment; manufacturing and testing labs handling aerospace and metallic production heat treatment; analytical and environmental laboratories; and oil and gas measurement work. SH Scientific muffle furnaces also appear in cathode recycling research, masterbatch testing, and ceramic resin firing, reflecting the breadth of processes a large heated chamber supports.
