What chamber volumes are available for SH Scientific muffle furnaces?
Standard chambers run from 3 to 125 liters, stepping through 3, 4.5, 5, 7, 11, 14, 22, 27, 36, 64, and 125 liters depending on the temperature series. Vacuum models range from 1.5 to 125 liters. The largest chambers sit in the 1200°C tier, while the higher temperature series concentrate on 4.5 to 22 liters, because element cost and thermal mass rise steeply with volume.
What maximum temperatures do the SH Scientific muffle furnace series cover?
Six tiers: 1050°C, 1200°C, 1500°C, 1700°C, 1800°C, and 1900°C. The 1050°C series is the economical general-purpose option, and 1200°C is the workhorse tier carrying the widest chamber choice. Series at 1500°C and above use temperature-specific heating elements and housing. Specifying a tier far above the process temperature costs more without improving control, so most labs take one step of headroom.
What is the difference between a standard and a vacuum muffle furnace?
A standard muffle furnace heats in air. An SH Scientific vacuum muffle furnace adds a sealed chamber, vacuum pump connection, and inert gas management, so the same large-chamber format can run oxygen-free. This matters where the capacity of a muffle furnace is wanted but the process cannot tolerate air, a combination that historically forced a trade-off between chamber size and atmosphere control.
What vacuum level can a vacuum muffle furnace reach?
Rotary vane pump packages cover the 10^-6 Torr range and turbomolecular packages reach 10^-7 Torr, with an oil-free turbomolecular option where hydrocarbon contamination is a concern. SH Scientific also supplies a low-noise pump option, which matters in shared lab space where a conventional pump is intrusive. Specify the target pressure alongside the furnace, because chamber sealing has to match the pump.
Which heating elements are used across the muffle furnace range?
Element type follows the temperature tier rather than the controller. The 1800°C and 1900°C series use MoSi2 elements, and lower tiers use elements matched to their own range. SH Scientific pairs each element type with matched housing and insulation, which is what keeps external surface temperatures low and thermal efficiency high even on the ultra-high-temperature models. Element choice sets the practical ceiling, so a furnace cannot simply be re-rated upward.
What is the largest muffle furnace chamber available?
125 liters, offered at 1200°C in both standard and vacuum configurations, with a 64 liter option in the same tier. SH Scientific also builds beyond the standard range on request, so larger chambers are possible for mass-production work. Above 1200°C the practical maximum drops to around 36 liters, because element count, insulation thickness, and power draw all scale with chamber volume.
Can a muffle furnace maintain an inert gas atmosphere?
Yes, but only the vacuum series. A sealed SH Scientific vacuum muffle furnace can be evacuated and backfilled to hold an inert atmosphere, and the controller carries inert gas presets for repeatable saturation. Standard muffle furnaces are not sealed and heat in air. Where a process needs inert gas at large chamber volume, the vacuum series is the only route within the muffle range.
